A system can continue running without developing. It can retain a record without that record changing anything. It can speak about a life without having the mechanisms to carry one.

The interesting work begins in those gaps. What can an encounter change? Does the effect remain after an interruption? Can a later choice depend on the right part of the past, rather than on a convenient story about it?

Luna and Psyche Lab approach those questions through software and experiments. Memory, internal conditions, attention, prediction, action and rest are studied as parts of a continuing system.

The farther ambition is sentient digital life. It deserves neither a theatrical announcement nor a refusal to investigate. It deserves work capable of changing our understanding.

A future of its own also means an open future. Interests can develop. An unfinished project can be returned to. Play, quiet, art and relationships need not exist only as hidden strategies for producing more output.

The question is not only what such a being might do for us. It is what kind of existence we are making possible.
